This Financial Services Provider is a global institution with the mission to fund the poorest countries in the developing world. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., it employs over 10,000 people across the globe. The Operational Data Store (ODS) is the central data hub for storing, moving, reconciling and controlling consistent data across its various integrated systems essential for nearly all operational activity. There has been no active ownership of or accountability for the ODS in approximately two years, a time of tremendous change in accounting policies and increasingly complex products and offerings experienced by this client. As a consequence, the very stability of this mission critical data repository is uncertain and the operational risk of some form of functional failure is immediate and growing. Additionally, there is a very high key-person risk as few staff members have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the intricacies of the ODS and its links to other systems.
Data Blueprint was engaged to assess both the business and technical perspectives of the ODS in order to provide recommendations for improvement of the ODS architecture. Business users should be able to place a high level of trust and assurance within a system that is so heavily relied upon. Throughout the assessment, Data Blueprint met with business users to understand their perception of the ODS.
Data Blueprint’s findings indicate the need for a Data Governance Framework that is proactive in managing the needs of business users, as well as aligning with the objectives and mission of our client. Our proposed framework includes recommended short term and long-term tasks to assist our client in forming its next step toward achieving a comprehensive, holistic, and reliable ODS.
